EQUITY+INCLUSION+CULTURE: How Are You, Really?

By: Sheila R. Brown, VP, Equity & Inclusion, AICP

Today, we might find ourselves under immense pressure. The constant drumbeat of change in our companies, in the commercial production industry, and in our personal lives can be stressful. Where do you find peace? Most people find peace in environments where they feel welcome, appreciated, and supported. Productions are typically high-pressure environments, with tight deadlines, demanding schedules, and the need for flawless execution. This intensity can take a toll on crew members if their well-being isn’t prioritized.

Producers and directors who prioritize mental health are investing directly in the success of their projects. By promoting healthy work hours, encouraging open communication, and valuing your crew as much as results, leaders set the stage for excellence. The result is a crew that feels respected and motivated, one that will go above and beyond because they know their contributions matter. A supportive set culture doesn’t just improve morale—it directly enhances the quality of the work produced, ensuring the final commercial resonates with authenticity and brilliance.

AICP Equity and Inclusion Committee Member, Becky Morrison, recently completed a training class with an incredible organization called 6ft from the Spotlight. This company pioneered the role of  Well-Being Facilitators in the UK over the past five years, working on major film projects like Harry Potter, Mickey 17, and various Marvel films.

6ft from the Spotlight is doing innovative work integrating risk assessment and coaching directly into the production process. Their framework and perspective offer so much value in centering the well-being of everyone in front of and behind the camera. Productions in the U.S. might want to follow their lead!
