EQUITY + INCLUSION + CULTURE: Mentorship is Your Gift to the Industry
By: Sheila R. Brown, VP, Equity & Inclusion, AICP
Mentorship has always played a pivotal role in shaping careers, particularly in the fast-paced and highly competitive world of commercial production and post production. For those looking to break into the industry—or for young professionals aiming to refine their craft—mentors offer more than just technical guidance; they provide invaluable insights on navigating client relationships, managing production challenges, and maintaining creative vision under tight deadlines. A mentor’s experience becomes a roadmap, helping emerging talent avoid common pitfalls while discovering new pathways to success. In commercial production, where the blend of artistry, storytelling, and logistics must be seamless, mentorship isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.

To strengthen these connections and foster deeper learning, the AICP Mentorship Program has launched a new series entitled "Ask The Expert." This series gives seasoned professionals a platform to share their specialized knowledge with the mentees in an accessible, conversational format. The goal is to create an open space for curiosity—providing insight on production budgeting, creative direction, or adapting to new technology in the field, this is their chance to get answers directly from industry leaders.
The inaugural session, "Ask the Directors," spotlighted directing duo and twin brothers Matthew and Jason Docter from Thinking Machine. Known for their inventive approach to storytelling and visual execution, the Docters shared how they got started, how their creative process has evolved, the lessons they’ve learned from high-profile campaigns, and their perspective on maintaining creative integrity in a commercial setting. Their discussion was both candid and inspiring, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at the director’s role in bringing brand visions to life.
This new series is more than a Q&A—it’s an invitation. The AICP Mentoring Program encourages members to step forward and share their own areas of expertise with the group. Whether you’re a cinematographer, producer, editor, or art director, your experience could be the key to unlocking someone else’s next big opportunity. By participating in "Ask the Expert", you’re not just giving back—you’re helping shape the next generation of commercial production talent. And who knows? The next great idea in advertising might start with a single conversation. If you are interested in being a featured expert, reach out to Sheila R. Brown at sheilab@aicp.com.
